Made in America – A New England Business – Jase Custom Fishing Rods

When you are contacted by a local, custom fishing rod maker and asked if you want to test out their product, who would ever say ‘no’?   “Custom” means “custom” and you really need to give them a try, get a feel, and understand the components that make them stand out above the rest.  On Sunday, October 27th, I had the pleasure of fishing with Erica and Jason from Jase Custom Fishing Rods.  While the fish failed to cooperate, fishing with the rods they brought was a reward in itself.

With just a little less than a year in business, Erica and Jason have worked hard to create quality rods that anyone would be happy to own.  Constructed, in New England, exclusively from MHX blanks, these rods are truly a work of art.  I had the opportunity to fish with two rods on that Sunday.  I’m very happy to report on my field testing and provide this information for the good folks at Wicked Fishah.

The first was a 7’3″ casting rod made for frogging.  It’s rated for 12-20# line and 5/16 to 1oz lures – Fast/Heavy Action.  The MHX MagBass (Frogger) Model # MB874-W is an extremely light weight rod that has plenty of backbone to pull bass from the slop during the height of frog fishing season.  It is also a perfect rod for Worming, Pitching, Carolina Rigs, or tossing a Jig & Pig.  My rating breakdown for the Frogger is reflected below.  Keep in mind, this is the first time I have ever used a ‘split grip’ rod grip and my rating is based on the simple fact that I’m not accustomed to it.. yet!

The MicroWave Guide System by the American Tackle Company is really something to see!

The second Jase Custom Fishing Rod that I tried was a 6’6″ – 3/16 to 5/8oz, spinning rod.  The MHX High Modulus SpinJig Model # HM-SJ783 is rated for 8-15# test line.  The rod is complemented with American Tackle Microwave Nanolite Guides, twill graphite split grip and anodized rings.  These guides were something to see.  I had heard of them, but not seen them used until Sunday.  To say I was impressed was an understatement.  The claim that these guides help cast further was accurate.  I was able to get more distance than expected.  The Microwave guide system, designed for spinning rods, works to correct “memory” issues when using monofilament line, but also works wonders with braid.  My rating breakdown of the MagBass Spinning Rod is as follows:

The work that Jason and Erica put in to creating these rods must be seen to be appreciated.  They are fully customizable to nearly any specification you desire.  They can be made in almost any color, with custom stickering, wrap colors, handles, and guides.  You simply have to give them the info on what you want, and they build exactly what you’re looking for. When speaking with them Sunday, they had just quoted a “Hulk” rod in green and purple.  Now that’s Wicked!  With prices starting at around $200.00, these rods are reasonably priced and comparable to other custom rod manufacturers.

Another advantage to Jase Custom Fishing Rods is the fact that they’re local.  Based in Enfield, NH, they’re close enough to provide a face to face interaction which, in my opinion, is an added bonus over dealing with companies who may be on the other side of the country.  If you’re in the NH area, you can see and purchase their rods at Upper Valley Outfitters on Hanover St. in Lebanon, or you can reach Jase at: www.JaseCustomFishingRods.com.  They can also be found on Facebook at:  https://www.facebook.com/JaseCustomFishingRods

Thanks for coming to meet me Jason and Erica.  It was truly a pleasure to meet you both, and get to test out the excellent rods you’re making.  I know I’ll be in touch for that swim bait rod we talked about.  Pet the dog for me!
